Chapter Ten
We arrived in the vicinity of Saunderson's bunker around one the next afternoon. Not that anybody had a working watch, but the sun was a little past straight up overhead. The night before had been tense. The addition of a third girl had upset the delicate balance of our menage.
Was she a plant? It doesn't usually pay to believe in coincidence. How could it be pure chance Red had stumbled across the very beauties used to test her first virtual world?
Was this show business? Was Saunderson out there rubbing his palms together as he calculated the cash he'd soon be piling up from this new technology?
Maybe this was indeed reality television. Maybe Madison and Casey were supposed to confront Red about her role in fixing them up with Saunderson. The girls thought they'd slithered into a rich man's bed of their own volition. Turned out things were more complicated than that. Darker. He'd never been anybody's fool.
Red's presence seemed like a big, fat clue into what was really going on. And yet I was more in the dark than ever.
Maybe the answers were waiting for us in that bunker. If this was a game, some final message was hidden there for the winners who made it through to the finish line.
Was this a game? Was there a prize? A world of riches, fame, and celebrity waiting for us on the other side?
Casey thought so.
Or was this real life and the only prize was survival?
That's what Madison thought.
As for me, I knew better than to make up my mind too early. We were probably in a virtual world, but it wasn't impossible for me to be wrong. And if I acted like I always had a do-over in a world where death was real and forever...
The forest was opening up ahead. We all moved more carefully. As soon as I spotted the fence, I touched finger to lip to signal silence.
Taking a step back into the shadows, we regarded the situation. The fence was waist-high barbed wire, rusty with age or the imitation of age. You could paint wire with a substance to make it age faster, couldn't you? Of course, if you were in a simulation, it would be even easier than that.
Anyway, it was no serious barrier at all. A strategic snip with a pair of bolt cutters, and we'd be in. Small metal US Department of Interior signs were chained at intervals to the upper tier of the fence line.
DANGER KEEP OUT
RESTRICTED AREA
AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY
LIVE SHOOTING RANGE
Every other sign repeated the same warning in Spanish. The two universal languages of our hemisphere. Was that supposed to scare us? We hadn't heard a single shot, other than the five fired by Red the day before. If this was once a shooting range, it wasn't now.
We stood silent, listening. There were fewer birds today.
“It's a bluff,” Madison said.
I agreed but looked at Red. “You have any insight to offer?”
“This isn't one of my sims. This is real life. How would I know?”
I shrugged and took out the bolt cutters.
